European Markets for Laparoscopic Devices 2008

Description

The European laparoscopic device market will experience moderate growth through 2012. Rising laparoscopic procedure volumes will drive unit sales in many market segments. In particular, access devices, hand instruments, and internal closure devices, which represented the three largest laparoscopic device segments, are used in the majority of procedures. Product technology will also support market expansion; recent innovations will have a significant impact on the direct energy and laparoscope segments in particular. Recent developments in the disposable advanced energy probe segment will enable surgeons to perform otherwise very difficult procedures, such as bowel resections, laparoscopically. Similarly, maximum visualization provided by high-definition video laparoscopes will help surgeons perform complex laparoscopic operations. Efforts by hospitals to cut costs of laparoscopic surgery will, however, be a serious impediment to growth in the European laparoscopic device market, resulting in declines in average selling prices (ASPs) in several segments. Moreover, the European market will be restricted by reusable options for many devices such as hand instruments and advanced energy probes. These reusable devices will be preferred for their ability to provide greater cost savings compared to premium-priced disposable products. Nonethless, the market drivers will outweight limiters, resulting in positive market growth over the forecast period.

This report incorporates information gathered using MRG's End-User Analytics service. This methodology involves a combination of up to three approaches to data collection: surveys, one-on-one interviews, and focus groups. Respondents can include physicians, surgeons, nurses, specialists, and/or administrators.

Report Highlights:

-Assess the penetration of laparoscopic procedures and the trends affecting the devices used in these procedures.

-Develop an understanding of recent innovations, including high-definition video laparoscopes and improvements to direct energy devices, and analyze how these advancements will impact overall market expansion.

-Evaluate the impact of Olympus' acquisition of Gyrus ACMI in 2007 and how it will affect the laparoscopic device market and its competitive landscape.
