The spinal implant market includes many different products, such as pedicle screws, rods, plates, interbody devices, artificial discs, and interspinous process decompression devices used in therapeutic procedures to stabilize and/or fuse the spine. Originally, instrumentation was used only to correct spinal deformities such as scoliosis but over the past 15 years, internal fixation with spinal implants has been used at an accelerated rate in spinal fusions. Recent growth has resulted in an estimated global market value of approximately $5 billion in 2008. The adoption of motion-preserving spinal implants, such as artificial discs and dynamic stabilization constructs, will be a key factor in the growth of this market in the near future.
