SCREENING PROGRAMS TO DRIVE EUROPEAN GI VIDEOSCOPE MARKET DESPITE ECONOMIC DOWNTURN, ACCORDING TO MILLENNIUM RESEARCH GROUP

Despite the economic downturn, market growth in the European gastrointestinal videoscope segment will be fueled by increased colorectal cancer screening programs in France, Germany, and the UK.

June 10, 2009—Waltham, Massachusetts—Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, finds that despite the economic downturn, market growth in the European gastrointestinal (GI) videoscope segment will be fueled by increased colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs in France, Germany, and the UK. As detailed in the recently released European Markets for GI Endoscopy Devices 2009 report, the rise in screening initiatives will expand patient awareness of the disease and, accordingly, grow GI videoscope procedure volumes through 2013.

Several CRC and celiac disease screening programs are now in place throughout Europe, heightening patient awareness of the importance of screening and improving access to the associated procedures. France, Germany, and the UK each have nationwide CRC screening initiatives, while regional initiatives exist in Italy and Spain. Screening programs will continue to expand in Europe over the next 5 years, in spite of the economic crisis, prompting a rise in colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) procedure volumes. Because GI videoscopes are used in these procedures, the expansion of the screening programs will fuel demand for GI videoscopes.

“The number of GI endoscopy procedures performed in Europe will experience considerable growth through 2013 due to increasing patient and physician demand for minimally invasive procedures,” says Tiffanie Demone, Senior Analyst at MRG. “Minimally invasive procedures allow for rapid patient recovery and short, if any, hospital stays. These procedures thus have several advantages over open surgical procedures, including cost savings for health care systems and improved quality of life for patients.”

MRG’s European Markets for Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy Devices 2009 now includes more competitor coverage and country-specific insights than ever before. The report provides detailed analysis of key industry competitors, procedural trending, and revenue growth for the major GI endoscopy devices in France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Spain. For the first time, this report includes a market analysis of enteral feeding giving sets, GI cytology brushes, and biliary cytology brushes. Additionally, the 2009 report includes an analysis of all segments of the Spanish GI endoscopy device market.
