Interventional radiologists (IRs) are increasingly pitted against general care or therapy physicians in the battle for procedure volumes. Unlike an anatomy specialist, such as an obstetrician/gynecologist (Ob/Gyn), IRs do not “own” patients, and are thus not tasked with total patient care; rather, they specialize in techniques and specific image-guided procedures, which they typically perform on referred patients. This process has created friction between IRs and other physicians since IRs receive full reimbursement for their procedures without having to deal with the pre- and post-operative patient care.

Growing from a Q309 score of -7.5 to 4.7 in Q409, the Millennium Research Group (MRG) Medtech Confidence Index (MCI) continues to edge cautiously upward, reflecting a growing conviction among medical professionals that economic turmoil is loosening its grip on the medical device market.

Minimally invasive spinal fusion in the US has historically been limited by difficulty associated with the techniques, a dearth of supporting clinical data, and a lack of surgeon awareness of or confidence in the associated devices. Despite these obstacles, in recent years the market for minimally invasive spinal fusion devices has flourished, prompted primarily by patient demand for minimally invasive options, which in turn has compelled surgeons to educate themselves in the techniques.

Bronchoscopy, a method of accessing and viewing the lungs for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, is currently used primarily as a cancer staging tool. Cutting-edge technologies, recently released and in development, make this small market important to watch, as technological innovations set the stage for therapeutic bronchoscopy to flourish.

Elective aesthetic procedures were the first to feel the fallout from the credit crisis and subsequent recession that gripped the US in 2008 and 2009. Firms that manufacture facial injectable products—botulinum toxin (BTX), hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers, particle and polymer fillers (PPFs), and collagen fillers—saw growth fall in concert with declining consumer disposable incomes.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a precursor to a number of serious cardiovascular complications, including stroke. The increasing prevalence and cost of treating these cardiovascular complications has prompted the medical community to take a closer look at treating AF, and as a result, device treatment of the condition is expanding by leaps and bounds.

By 2014, the total US prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) will reach almost 30 million. This has created significant opportunity in the medical device space. In particular, demand for oxygen therapy devices is growing. Oxygen therapy is the leading treatment for patients suffering from conditions resulting from oxygen deficiency, including COPD. Although the US oxygen therapy device market opportunity is appealing, recent reimbursement cuts may restrict its potential.

Growing from a Q209 score of -16.3 to -7.5 in Q309, the Millennium Research Group Medtech Confidence Index (MCI) suggests that medical technology markets are continuing to regain strength despite the ongoing economic recession.

The market for spinal nonfusion devices is set to explode over the next five years, drastically changing the landscape of the US spinal implant market. Designed to allow for greater range of motion following surgery, nonfusion devices will enjoy increased demand over the next five years as the over-40 population in the US multiplies.

Indications for hernia repair are strong across many regions of the world. The obesity epidemic and the growing elderly population, demographics present in many Western countries, suggest a growing need for the procedure. Many obese and older individuals will undergo surgeries that increase the risk of hernia development, such as laparoscopy.
